For decades there has been a conflict between the minority group Rohingya and the Buddhist majority in Burma. Since the county’s independence 1948 approximately 1,5 million Rohingyas have been forced to leave their homes due to persecution and assault. In August the last violence wave took off. So far over 600 000 people, most of them children, have escaped over the boarder to Bangladesh. Many have been forced into boats, washed up dead on Inani Beach’s saffron yellow sand. Survivors have testified of abuse, rape and burned villages. Amnesty International equates Burma’s treatment of the Rohingyas with apartheid.
