"Afghanistan's hunger crisis"

Afghan children suffering from malnutrition, (2L) Ahmed Wali, 2 1/2 years old, suffering from the condition known as kwashiorkor, from Nadali, lays next to (3L) Ahmed Khan, 1, as they receive critical medical care in the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at the Bost Hospital, a Medecins Sans Frontiers (MSF) assisted hospital, on September 23, 2013 in Lashkar Gah, in Helmand Province, Afghanistan.

Ahmed Wali is the ninth of the ten children of his mother, Baka Bebi, who is in her mid 30s; she weaned him onto powdered milk mixed with stream water as soon as she could.

Guldana breast fed Ahmad Khan for 2 months, after which the family bought a goat to provide milk for the child. After few months Ahmad Khan stopped eating, throwing up food given to him. It took one month of Ahmad being sick for Guldana to bring her son in due to the distance and inadequate care where she was. The Bost hospital has seen a four-fold increase in severe acute malnutrition cases since January, according to officials with Medecins sans Frontieres, which supports the Afghan-run hospital with funding and supplementary foreign staff.
