"SURVIVORS"

1 of 7

The numbers of people attending the semi-annual Combat Veterans of Iwo Jima Symposium and Reunion continues to get smaller and smaller. With many veterans in their 70s and 80s it gets harder and harder to travel, gather, and share memories. The weekend event held sessions on a variety of subjects, including the evolution of amphibious assault; a screening of "Flags of Our Fathers;" and a tour of the National Museum of the Marine Corps at Quantico, Virginia. Bill Jayne, 81, of Hobe Sound, Florida. Jayne served as a capitan on a 20mm cannon on the bow of a Landing Ship Tank, an amphibious assult ship, during the battle of Iwo Jima.
